TL;DR

  • Global markets are turning risk-off as Iran tensions and Hormuz shipping threats pressure futures

  • SPY, QQQ, and small caps are pointing lower pre-market, with IWM leading the downside

  • Oil and silver are rising while Bitcoin and growth stocks weaken

  • Europe is seeing the heaviest selling, with Germany and UK markets dropping more than 2%

  • Semiconductor stocks are under pressure pre-market, with AMD and INTC both falling sharply

  • Defensive and geopolitical-sensitive names like PLTR are holding up better

  • Traders are watching SPY $730 support closely as the key level that could decide Friday’s market direction

Good morning, and welcome to The Daily Setup — your pre-market briefing from TradingDecks.

Here's what happened overnight, what's moving this morning, and what to watch at the bell.

1. THE OPEN — WHERE ARE WE?

Futures are pointing to a soft open to close out the week. The Iran war continues dominating headlines — Trump says a ceasefire holds, but clashes flared, China confirmed an attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, and Toyota is already flagging a $4.3 billion hit.

The dominant theme: geopolitical risk premiums are back. Small caps are taking the worst of it, and Europe is getting crushed.

3. OVERNIGHT GLOBAL MARKETS

Europe is the weak link this morning — Germany (EWG) dropped 2.23% and the UK (EWU) fell 2.47%, with bond vigilantes circling UK gilts as PM Starmer absorbs election losses. Asia was softer but steadier, with Japan (EWJ) off 0.75% and China (FXI) down 0.80%. No region is green — this is a broad risk-off morning.

4. PRE-MARKET MOVERS

TSLA +3.28% ($411.79) — No clear headline catalyst — could be short covering into the weekend or a sympathy bounce. Watch for news.

PLTR +2.44% ($137.05) — No clear catalyst pre-market, but defense and surveillance names often catch a bid during elevated geopolitical tension.

UBER -3.08% ($76.73) — No clear catalyst — watch for news at the open.

AMD -3.07% ($408.46) — Chip names under pressure; INTC also off 3.00%. Sector rotation out of semis this morning.

COIN -2.53% ($192.96) — Follows Bitcoin lower as BITO falls 1.70% overnight.

6. THE SETUP — SPY LEVELS FOR TODAY

Opening bias: Gap down. SPY closed Thursday at $733.83 and is trading at $731.58 pre-market — expect an open roughly 2 points lower.

Key level above: $733.83 — Thursday's close. Reclaiming that level intraday would flip the tone.

Key level below: $730 — a clean round-number support. A break below it in early trade opens the door to further selling into the weekend.

The play: If SPY holds $730 in the first 30 minutes and starts to recover, Friday short-covering could drive a partial fill of the gap. Failure to hold $730 early is the bearish signal.

7. ONE-LINE TAKEAWAY

Oil is up, Europe is cracking, and small caps are bleeding — the market is pricing in a weekend where the Iran situation doesn't get simpler.
